Google have just announced their new flagship phone, Google Pixel, in a bid to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung. Earlier in the month, we talked about how Microsoft are selling off their Windows phone branch, and instead focusing on a new Nokia phone for use in india. However, Google have decided to progress with their own phone and make it far more competitive in a market which is currently dominated by the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the  Apple iPhone 7.

The main selling point for the new Pixel phone is its integration with Google Assistant. In an announcement reminiscent of those made popular by Steve Jobs at Apple, Google opened by talking about how their Google Assistant has improved in a number of different fields, including security, translation, and photo selection.

Google’s aim has been to build their phone around the use of their assistant as opposed to making it an add-on to the pre-designed phone. Although the assistant as demonstrated in the #madebygoogle announcement didn’t demonstrate any one aspect that was particularly astounding, it clearly illustrated how smooth the interaction is, with the example of taking one’s spouse to a concert.

The second point made in the 5-point presentation was the focus on the new camera. This section kicked off with a joke (made at the expense of the new iPhone 7) that there was no camera bump on the back face of the phone. The camera boasts 12.3 megapixels, which is right around the same mark as both the Galaxy S7 and the iPhone 7. However, the Pixel camera was voted independently as the best smartphone camera ever. Another key feature of the camera is active image stabilization, which aims to stabilize video without the “jello” effect found on post-production image stabilization.

Key Features:

  • Available in 5 inch and 5.5 inch, but all features are available on both
  • Will come in three self-explanatory colors: Quite black, very silver, really blue
  • Camera: No camera bump, 12.3 megapixel camera, f2.0 aperture, live video stabilization.
  • Built-in 24/7 live support: Google will be available to offer support at all hours of the day via live chat, or a phone call.
  • Price: $649, available to pre-order from today

We will continue to update this article as the announcement continues.
