Installing Windows 7 Over Vista

If you wish to keep a significant amount of data intact in your PC and simultaneously enjoy the performance and features of Windows 7 then installing Windows 7 Over Vista by a simple upgrade method is exactly what you need. This method will move most of your files, settings and programs from Windows Vista to Windows 7 but it is recommended to back up important files and documents. Also, it is recommended to print this tutorial if you are not using any other device for the same purpose.

The edition of Windows 7 you can update your system will be determined by your current edition of Windows Vista and also your hardware configuration. However, if this does not happen in your case, Custom installation method  can still be used to upgrade to a desired Windows 7 edition , but this process will wipe out all your files, programs, or settings. If that be the case you can navigate to Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (custom installation).

Cross Check

If your PC runs Windows Vista smoothly that itself gives a green signal for Windows 7 Upgrade, but just to be sure about your computer’s hardware, devices, or programs that might effect installing Windows 7, it is recommended to run the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor from the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor webpage. It will help find any issues and also give measures to take care of them.

Step 4: As mentioned previously, on the next page you will be prompted to “Get Installation Update” which is recommended and needs Internet connection, but the installation process can still proceed without it.

Step 5: Check  I accept the license terms box and then Next.

Step 6:  A window will appear with “Which type of installation do you want?” Just click on Upgrade.

Step 7: Even if you see a compatibility report, continue the process and follow instructions till the installation is complete.

Update Drivers

A driver is a Software that recognizes and helps the OS to run hardware like a sound/Video card, printer etc. The Drivers for most of the hardware come bundled with Windows 7 but if there is a problem with any of your hardware you can update your Windows 7 drivers. This can be done by navigating to Start button>All Programs and then click Windows Update. If this doesn’t resolve your Driver Issue check out  Windows 7 Compatibility Center for direct driver downloads and links to manufacturer support pages.
